Created a lagoon that provided irrigation water to the Petrifying Springs Park Golf Course until 1976. Also served as a vehicle bridge for the road in the park. 2012- "This small earthen dam capped with concrete blocks the Pike River and provides a vehicle crossing for the west leg of the park loop road. The dam's downstream side and the adjacent riverbanks are covered with fieldstone set within mortar. A metal guard rail attached to heavy steel posts is anchored to the bridge's downstream (southwest) side. Situated upstream is a poured-concrete intake structure that features a moveable steel gate. The intake allows water from the river to enter into an underground penstock that exits underneath Footbridge #4, which is located immediately adjacent to the dam. The dam was built in 1936 to create a lagoon for recreation and to provide water to irrigate the golf course. A replacement water system in 1976 rendered it obsolete for irrigation. The earth removed to create the lagoon was used to grade the golf course. The lagoon was abandoned in 1976; this siltinundated feature is now partially forested wetland." -"Petrifying Springs Park DOE", Signed by Michael E. Stevens, SHPO (2012). |
