James Clarke received a patent in 1844 for the northeast quarter of Section 15, in the Town of Albion (encompassing this property). The 1861 Atlas of Dane County confirms his ownership of 160 acres. No building is depicted in the location of W983 WIS 73, but one is depicted where nearby 603 Craig Road stands today. By 1873, the acreage had passed to James Clarke’s two sons, Samuel and John Graham, with Samuel assuming ownership of the land encompassing 603 Craig Road and John Graham owning the land encompassing W983 WIS 73. Both owned 80-acre parcels, and both of the parcels depicted buildings by this time. The 1890 Plat Book of Dane County indicates the farmstead as owned by the “James G. Clarke Estate.” The 1904 Atlas of Dane County and 1911 Standard Historical Atlas of Dane County indicate Samuel Jr., John Graham Clarke’s son, as the owner of W983 WIS 73. His land holdings included 160 acres. By 1931, the property had passed to Samuel’s son-in-law, Clifford Vickers. The acreage and ownership remained the same through at least 1964. The 1968 Official Farm Plat Map depicts Glenn Neal as the owner of the 160-acre parcel, of which he remained through at least 1979. According to Ms. Johnson, upon Glenn’s death, Mrs. Glenn Neal entered into a land contract with the Wileman family, who apparently owned the property (depicted as “Crazy Acres” on maps) through the 1980s.
