Additional Information: | It is unclear if this building was originally constructed here of if it was possibly moved here at a later date. The 1901 map indicates the property as encompassing 40 acres and owned by F. Mesalk; a building is indicated on the property, but not in the present location. Further, no schools are indicated on the 1901 map in this location; the map does show two schools in the nearby vicinity of the property, including School #1, further east on Elderberry Road, and School #2, south along CTH E. By 1930, however, the school is indicated in its current location on a 79-acre parcel owned by Arthur Griese. The 1956 and 1959 maps also indicate the school. None of the maps or early histories of the area indicate the school building's name; "Smith School" is derived from an online map. The front facade faces south. The house is used a residence and nearly all windows are replacements with some openings reduced in size. |
