Additional Information: | THIS BUILDING IS THE MOST INTACT OF THE SCIENCE BUILDINGS ON THE UW-SYSTEM'S CAMPUSES AND IT WAS BUILT IN TWO STAGES. THE FIRST PORTION CONSISTED OF THE BRICK-CLAD PAVILION THAT CONTAINS A LECTURE HALL AND THE L. E. PHILLIPS PLANETARIUM. THIS ONE-STORY PAVILION IS ATTACHED TO THE MAIN PORTION OF THE BUILDING BY AN ENCLOSED PEDESTRIAN BRIDE THAT SPANS A SMALL CREEK AND THE MUCH LARGER FOUR-STORY MAIN PORTION, WHICH HAS A BRICK-CLAD FIRST STORY AND UPOPER STORIES THAT ARE CLAD IN PRECAST MASONRY-CLAD PANELS. THE MAIN BUILDING HAS A RECTILINEAR PLAN AND IT SURROUNDS A LARGE INNER COURTYARD. HALF OF THIS MAIN BUILDING WAS BUILT IN 1963 ALONG WITH THE PAVILION, AND THE REST OF IT WAS BUILT IN 1969 TO THE SAME DESIGN. THE BUILDING CURRENTLY HOUSES CLASSROOMS AND OFFICE FOR FACULTY WHO TEACH IN THE DEPARTMENTS OF BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, PHYSICS AND ASTRONOMY, GEOLOGY, GEOGRAPHY, AND ANTHROPOLOGY. |
