Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation-Public History. Of Merrill's grand hotels, only the Lincoln House is still standing. The first Lincoln House was constructed at the NW corner of E. Main and Mill Streets sometime prior to 1878. In that year the Lincoln House burned and Posey constructed another Lincoln House on the same site. Again, on October 27, 1897 the Lincoln House burned and was replaced with the present three-story brick structure in 1901. The present Lincoln House burned to a lesser degree in November, 1944, and has since been converted to offices, while maintaining its historic name. |
