Additional Information: | The Dr. Michael Ravn House is significant under Criterion C as a good example of American Foursquare style architecture in Merrill. This house also is a contributing resources in the Center Avenue Historic District. This house was constructed in 1908 by Dr. Michael Ravn, the owner of the Ravn Hospital. Michael and Inga Ravn lived in the house until 1930, when Ravn's son Bjarne Ravn was listed as the resident, as late as 1945. In 1897 the Sisters of Mercy of the Holy Cross established their facility in the former residence of Dan Shea (not extant) on Prospect Street. The sisters rented the Merrill Hospital building in 1898 and operated the hospital until Dr. Michael Ravn arrived in Merrill in 1900. Dr. Ravn remodeled the building, renamed it after himself, and operated it as a twenty-five bed private hospital. Operating until 1923, the Ravn Hospital dopted the lastest medical technology as it became available. |
