NOTES
Additional Information:The Wenzel and Duteau Hardware Store is significant under Criterion C as a good example of commercial vernacular architecture in Merrill. This building is a contributing resource in the West Main Street Commercial H.D.

Gustav Wenzel and Louis Duteau operated the Wenzel and Duteau hardware firm, which was located at 418 W. Main Street. By 1905 the men had dissolved their partnership, but Wenzel stayed in the hardware business at the same address. In 1911 Gus Wenzel advertised ranges, sporting goods, guns and ammunition, cement, lime, coal, and building materials in the city directory. Wenzel Hardware remained in business as late as 1945.

Re-surveyed in 2005. Reconfigured retail front has reduced the size of display windows by the insertion of vertical wood infill.
