Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. This one and a half-story astylistic utilitarian ranger station features an L-shaped plan configuration, a concrete foundation, a masonry construction, wood trim, and an asphalt shingled gable roof. Dormers intersect with the main roof in the attic story. The exterior walls are clad in a purplish red granite. The flooring on the first story consists of a combination of concrete and asphalt tile, while the flooring on the second story consists of maple. Many rangers prefer this station, calling it the "most beautiful of all the stations." The building is in excellent condition. The Merrill Ranger Station has functioned since its 1940 date of construction as an office, a storage facility for equipment and hand tools, and living quarters for the ranger. The structure is still in use today. The station is planning to change enclosed stalls (plus additional stalls, perhaps) into office space, and move vehicles and equipment into a new building. A structure related to this station is a garage. (See Map Code 10/23). Structures on the adjacent Council Grounds State Park site were built of the same stone material within the same period. |
