Additional Information: | WIDE OVERHANGING EAVES. FALSE 1/2 TIMBERING IN GABLE. 6/1 WINDOWS. SMITH A WAUSAU LAWYER. 415 Dahl Street Charles F. and Jeanette Smith-Dr. Clarence and Alberta Richards House This two-story, frame, Prairie School house was built for Charles F. and Jeanette Smith in 1916 (City of Rhinelander tax rolls, Rhinelander telephone books). The house has clapboard on the first story, and on the second-story front facade, stucco with narrow boards set in a geometric pattern. The broad, front-gabled roof has brackets with knee braces. The flat-roofed, full-facade, front porch has closed rails, clapboarded piers, and short posts. The integrity is somewhat compromised by a side garage addition. Charles F. Smith (1887-1970) was born in Nashville, Tennessee, and graduated from the University of Wisconsin law school. He came to Rhinelander in 1910, worked as an attorney for many years, and served as Municipal Judge from 1913 until 1921 (History of Lincoln, Oneida and Vilas Counties, p. 238). Smith lived in this house until circa 1924. He was succeeded by Dr. Clarence Richards. Richards was not only a prominent local physician, but also sat on the board of directors of the Thunder Lake Lumber Company (Rhinelander City Directories). The Richards family remained in the house until at least 1965. |
