Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the State Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. Scheduled for demolition in 2013 for expansion of Shephard Park and construction of a boat ramp. This one and a half-story astylistic utilitarian garage featured a rectangular shaped plan configuration, a concrete foundation, an artificial stone exterior, a wood trim, and an asphalt shingled multi-gabled roof. The interior was finished with paint, concrete flooring on the first story, and maple flooring on the second. Also part of the architectural design were ten garage doors, six of which were of the overhead type. The combination garage and shop, which underwent a remodeling in 1937, was demolished June 1, 1993. A structural problem that plagued the building was that the garage floor had settled badly, causing damage to the concrete floor and the outside walls. Before its demise, the structure was considered to be in fair condition. It was built in 1935 during the W.P.A. program. The building (#353) was used as a tool and equipment storage facility and as a repair shop. Also part of the site were underground storage tanks. One tank filled with gasoline was found to be leaking. The leak developed into what was reportedly the worst spill site in the state. The DNR had to clean up the site, but the city was also seeking a place for its new sewage treatment facility. As the site was originally owned by the city, the DNR could only sell to the city if they ever vacated. Therefore a deal was made that the building would be raised, and the site leakage would be mediated while construction of a new sewage treatment facility proceeded on the site. The DNR is currently purchasing a site (one mile north) where a replacement garage can be constructed. This new site will be the home of a new ranger station in 2003. |
