Additional Information: | Photo code #2: 75BR-9/34,35 Large, almost completely intact retirement home building. Building as it now stands, is the result of many additions added to the original building, all of which share similarities in materials, height, and general appearance. The earliest survivng remnant now contains the modernized main entrance visible in (119/23). Buildings are all of yellow brick, having a raised basement story with a cut stone water table above on the earliest portions. The original portion was buialt as a private asylum and is L-shaped and has grouped flat arched windows with cut stone sills. Each triple window group has a large center window flanked by two smaller side windows. The next (1901) addition extends the original block to the west and has sgemental arched window openings on the first floor of the front facade. The other windows are single flat arched style with cut stone sills. A concrete or cut stone string course encircles the block above the third floor windows and there is a plain parapet above with a concrete coping. The east and west facing wings date from the 1920's with the easterly portion (119/24) being designed by Foeller and Schober and dating from 1922-1924. Both wings ahve a tall basement story topped by a concrete water table. The east wing windows are paird wth a wide brick mullion between with brick lintels above with concrete keystones and stops. Corners have brick quoins. A stylized concrete entablature acts as a cornice for this wing, and the brick parapet above has concrete coping. There is a concrete panel in the parapet on the street facade having three interlocked rings. A one story tall flat roofed sunporch coverds the first floor of this wingd on the street facade, and has a stepped parapet with a name panel reading: "Odd Fellow Home." Historical Background: In 1890, the Odd Fellows chapter in Greey Bay built a home for their aged members and the orphas of members. J.L. Jorgenson, noted local merchant and Post Grand Master, was primarily responsible for the creation of the facility. The original portion is now gone, replaced over time by added wings in 1907 and 1924 (A,D). #650: Several related buildings, including one story tall brick laundry. 1A story brick garage, adn much newer residential building behind.
