Additional Information: | Photo code #2: BR-FRV 5/11,12 Fine earlier industrial buildings with the large one story tall factory building having a pilastered facade and corbel table below the eaves. The original windows were intact in 1975, but have since been filled with concrete block. The north facing end wall of the factory building has a parapet topped with terra cotta coping. An earlier gable roofed two story tall combination office and factory building abuts the larger and later factory building and has a tall cut stone foundation and segmental arched second floor windows. All walls of these two buildings are brick. A large modern flat-roofed concrete block addition extends along the entire west facing facade of the older buildings and nearly double the size of the building. NAER INVENTORY (06/1979): Segall's Saving Center is one and two-story irregular-shaped brick structure, painted yellow and red; with a wood truss gable roof. The facility measures approximately 175' x 60'. It has a reinforced six-inch concrete floor. The main wall height is 20'. The roof is supported by heavy wood beams and posts. The brick exterior of the building is pilastered and includes imbrication and ornamentation. The facility appears to have been built in two stages as the northern postion has a slightly different exterior appearance from the southern portion, and has a rusticated concrete block foundation. The southern portion's foundation is poured concrete. Two concrete block additions have been made to the original building(s). The exact date of construction for this facility is unknown. The earliest manufacturing concern mentioned is a property abstract is the Green Bay Manufacturing Co., in 1906. The structure is listed in a 1917 insurance map, including both the northern and southern portions of the facility, and is called the Green Bay Barker Co., machinery manufacturing. A 1934 insurance map lists the facility as the Green Bay Barker Machine & Tool Co. Other names listed in the property abstract, in addition to Green Bay Barker, include the Astor Co., Cleereman Machine Tool Co., and the Willow Machinery Corp. The Cleereman firm started business in 1910 (although where is started is unclear) and made machinery for the paper insdustry. Later, drilling machine tools became its primary product. From 1955-57 a "sizable" addition was made to the University Avenue facility and new equipment was installed by Cleereman's. About 1967 the University Avenue facility was purchased by the Kearney and Trecker Corp. and its machinery was moved to Milwaukee. the structure has been used as the Segall's store since 1971.
