Negatives filed with survey project. NAER INVENTORY (06/1981): This 40' x 75' building was constructed in 1873 by Allison George Wells. He started out in the retail grocery business, turning to the flour milling trade a few years later. He subsequently extended the scope of his business, first to include the elevator and grain business, and later, the handling of coal and building materials. The company was incorporated in 1893 and the name was changed from A.G. Wells Co. to A.G. Wells Co., Inc. The companies market was northeastern Wisconsin as well as the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. A great share of the supplies went to logging camps to supply the horses with feed and the men food. After the turn of the century, the company began milling formula feeds and processing seeds. Allison's son, Hugo, entered the business in 1908 and became president in 1921. By 1951 they had their own delivery service of feeds, seeds, grains, fertilizers, flour, salt, and farm chemicals. The building consists of brick, with a stucco finish. It has the capacity of 40,000 bushels. |
