Additional Information: | The Whitefish Bay Women’s Club was organized in 1917 and remains active to this day. In its first year, 25 members set a precedent for commitment to non-partisan political involvement by taking up women’s suffrage. Locally, the club was instrumental in the establishment of the Whitefish Bay Fire Department, Whitefish Bay Public Library, and the Whitefish Bay School District’s kindergarten program. For more information on the fire department and local library, refer to Chapter 4 Government and Chapter 8 Education respectively. A clubhouse was constructed on Henry Clay Street sometime prior to 1964. Throughout its history the organization has also served social, volunteering, and philanthropic purposes. In addition to activity sessions such as bridge games, stitching circles, golf, crafts, book reviews, and luncheons, the group is active in community fundraising, providing scholarships, and supporting local charities such as Badger Girls State, Junior Achievement, and the Whitefish Bay Foundation. In 1995, the club was comprised of over 400 members making it the largest Women’s Club in Wisconsin. |
