Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the State Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. The Bayfield Fish Hatchery rearing pond features an irregular shaped plan configuration and an earthen foundation. DESCRIPTION OF COMPLEX: The Bayfield Fish Hatchery is located on Highway 13 south of Bayfield in Bayfield county. The Bayfield Fish Hatchery was constructed in 1897 and is a gambrel-roofed shingle style brownstone-and-shingles two and one half story building. A 1940 frame spawning house is included in the complex. The spawning house was originally a shelter over a receway; it was remodeled for storage in 1963. This is another unique hatchery site with a poured concrete show pool, which is in good condition. The hatchery building is in very good condition and has been registered on the National Register of Historic Places since 1981. Resurveyed 2015: The previously identified resource is a large triangular shaped rearing pond with an earthen foundation constructed in 1923. Four observation earthworks extend into the pond from the surrounding walkway. Historic aerials indicate these earthworks had extended across the pond, but presently they have either been shortened or collapsed in the middle. Three drainage ponds are located adjacent to the east end of the rearing pond. |
