DESCRIPTION OF COMPLEX:

The Bayfield Fish Hatchery is located on Highway 13 south of Bayfield in Bayfield County. The Bayfield Fish Hatchery was constructed in 1897 and is a gambrel-roofed shingle style brownstone and shingles two and a half story building. A 1940 frame spawing house is included in the complex. The spawning house was originally a shelter over a raceway; it was remodeled for storage in 1963. this is another unique hatchery site, with a poured concrete show pool, which is in good condition. The hatchery building is in very good condition and has been registered on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.

Resurveyed 2015:
This previously identified resource is a show pond located within the National Register-listed State Fish Hatchery. The round poured concrete pond was constructed in 1923.6 The concrete walls extend approximately two feet above the ground and include concrete coping. Metal pipes support a cable railing around the top of the pond.

The show pond is associated with the State Fish Hatchery which has played a significant role in conservation and the commercial fishing industry on Lake Superior since its initial establishment in 1897. The main hatchery building is listed on the National Register. The boundary does not encompass the show pond, although it dates to the historic period. Because project activities are limited to repair and
replacement in kind of existing culverts and will not include landscape alterations, the hatchery and associated show pond
will not be impacted. Should project activities change, the historic boundary and effects may need to be reevaluated.
