Additional Information: | ARCHITECTURAL STATEMENT: Description: This Chateauesque building is a two-story brick masonry commercial structure with cut stone trim. It is five bays wide on its north front elevation. Each bay has a group of second floor windows set over a ground floor shop front. The center bay, however, is narrower and provides access to the second floor. Second floor windows are fixed rectangular units with transoms above. Each window group is oulined by cut stone trim; on the second floor this is rectangular, but on the first floor the stone trim meets at the corners in a quarter-round circular detail, giving the building a slightly Moorish flavor. Above and below the second floor windows are panels outlined by brick header courses. Small stone squares also decorate the facade, set in pairs at the column locations at the top of each floor level. The top of the building is completed by a stone coping on the parapet which rises in a semi-circular form over the center evtry bay; within it is a round stone unit set at the center of the circle. Significance: The buildig is anicely detailed example of early twentieth-century period style design popular for smaller commercial development. Its subtle Moorish flavor makes the building significant to the area. HISTORICAL STATEMENT: The bulding was built in 1925 by contractor Hugo Miller. |
