NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. The Janesville Pumping Station (See Bib. Ref. A, B) is a red brick structure with a water table, projecting window sills, a stone belt course, a vented cupola, and a slate covered hip roof. A semicircular window appears in the front dormer. Additions to the main section are also built of red brick. The building, which is in good condition, is architecturally significant because it represents a type, period or method of construction. On May 10, 1887, the city granted a franchise to Turner, Clarke & Rawson of Boston to construct and operate a waterworks system throughout Janesville. The firm completed the plant and its services were accepted by the city on June 2, 1888. Architectect Ernest Boynton designed the section built in 1887. (See Bib. Ref. A). The building is historically significant because it is associated with the development of a locality and because it is associated with the Public Works.
