Additional Information: | Designed campus landscape centered on the north side of the West Main Street/South Whiton Street intersection. Includes three contributing sites, two contributing structures, and two contributing objects. The sites are the Lawn as a whole (established 1868), the Salisbury Arboretum (begun in 1886), and the Chopp Arboretum (begun c. 1937; dedicated in 1975). The two structures and the two objects form the Gateway (1934): the two fieldstone walls are the structures, while the flanking, free-standing, fieldstone piers are the objects. The designed landscape has evolved over the past 140 years to include cultural, structural, and natural resources associated with the history of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. These features collectively delineate the entrance and center of the campus during its historic period (1868-1960). |
