Barstow Street, the city's main commercial thoroughfare, presents a fine example of the Art Deco Style, which was popular in the early to mid decades of the twentieth century. The two story structure is faced with terra cotta that is glazed a cream and a light turquoise color (this is the accenting hue). Dominating the upper portion of the facade are two slightly projecting pavillions which rise above the roofline to form stepped parapets. These elements, which are separated by a band of windows, allude to setbacks which are a common Art Deco feature. Motifs associated with the late Gothic Revival - trefoils and quatrefoils - ornament this upper area. A similar building, designed by local architect, E.J. Hancock,, is located at 403 S. Barstow Street, 1P/13. Atterations to the building include modern windows on the second floor and a new storefront area at street level (see early photo in collection of Chipewa Valley Museum). From 1926-1936 Kline's Department Store occupied this building (B). Sidney Kline was the proprietor and lived at the Hotel Eau Claire. In 1936, the Fashion Clothing Store obtained the lease to the building. The building was vacant from 1973-1976. In 1977, Fering's Interiors, a gift and furniture store, moved into the building. Also listed on the National Register as a part of the Confluence Commercial Historic District, #07001047, listed on 10/3/2007 (listed on the state register 1/19/2007). |
