NOTES
Additional Information: THIS TWO-STORIED, SIDE-GABLED HOUSE WAS DESIGNED WITH A RECTANGULAR-SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION, A LIMESTONE EXTERIOR, AND A GABLE ROOF. THE WALLS ARE COMPOSED OF COURSED RUBBLE, WHEREAS THE CORNERS, THE WINDOW OPENINGS AND THE DOOR OPENINGS ARE MARKED BY LARGER STONE BLOCKS. BUILT IN C. 1884 (SEE BIB. REF. A) WITH VARIOUS ADDITIONS MADE SUBSEQUENTLY, THIS RESIDENCE IS PRESENTLY IN GOOD CONDITION. ALSO LOCATED ON THE SITE IS A GARAGE; HOWEVER, THERE IS NO INTENSIVE SURVEY DESCRIBING THE ELEMENTS OF THIS PARTICULAR STRUCTURE. ARCHITECTURAL/ENGINEERING SIGNIFICANCE: THE WILLIAM MARR HOUSE, BUILT IN 1844, IS AN ARCHITECTURALLY SIGNIFICANT PROPERTY, REPRESENTING A METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION. MOST LIKELY THE EFFORT OF A CORNISH MASON, THE LARGE LIMESTONE RESIDENCE IS DISTINGUISHED BY THE QUALITY OF ITS STONEWORK AND IS A COMPLIMENT TO THE PUBLIC BUILDINGS IN THE CITY -- THE IOWA COUNTY COURTHOUSE (NRHP 1972) AND THE OLD ROCK SCHOOL (NRHP 1978) -- WHICH ARE ALSO OF STONE CONSTRUCTION. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: THE WILLIAM MARR RESIDENCE ALSO CONTAINED A FURNITURE STORE, THE FIRST ESTABLISHED IN THE COMMUNITY OF DODGEVILLE. MARR, WHO DIED DURING THE CHOLERA EPIDEMIC OF 1850, WAS SUCCCEEDED IN BUSINESS BY HIS SON, JAMES. (SEE BIB. REF. A). NOTE: THERE IS A REAR FRAME ADDITION, AND THE FRONT ENTRANCE PORCH APPEARS TO BE A LATER MODIFICATION.
Bibliographic References:A. DODGEVILLE CHRONICLE, JULY 2, 1927. (NOTE: THE TAX RECORDS FOR DODGEVILLE, WHICH BEGIN WITH THE YEAR 1862, LIST JAMES MARR AS THE OWNER IN 1862. THE TAX RECORDS ARE AVAILABLE AT THE AREA RESEARCH CENTER, UW-PLATTEVILLE). B. WALKING TOUR OF HISTORIC DODGEVILLE, WISCONSIN, DODGEVILLE HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION, 1995.
