THE EUREKA LOCK AND CANAL PLAYED AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE OVERALL DEVELOPMENT OF THE HISTORIC FOX-WIS WATERWAY SYSTEM. TODAY THIS IS THE ONLY OPERABLE LOCK BETWEEN THE CITIES OF PORTAGE AND OSHKOSH. HOWEVER, UP TO & SHORTLY AFTER WWI EUREKA'S COMMERCIAL RIVER ACTIVITY BEGAN TO DECLINE WHEN THE RAILROAD BEGAN REPLACING THE RIVER BOATS AS THE MOST EFFICIENT WAY OF TRANSPORTING COMMODITIES TO MARKET. |
