NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. This structure consists of a limestone foundation that supports a tall octagonal structure with clapboard siding and several irregularly placed sash windows. The roof of the structure has wide eaves with brackets. Above the roof is a walkway with an iron balustrade. A cupola with tall legs sits at the very top of the structure. This lighthouse was built for functional reasons, that is, for navigational reasons guiding boats into the marina. The original beacon is on top of the cupola and lines up with another beacon for boaters to safely enter the harbor. It also serves as a recreational structure in Fond du Lac's most popular park. In 1933, lumberman W.J. Nuss donated the materials to build this lighthouse. Architect Roger Sutherland designed the 40 foot structure. [landmarks information] Although of fairly recent construction, the popular feature in Lakeside Park has become a symbol of the city. See information for record #16501.
