NOTES
Additional Information:Morgan L. Burdick owned the building from 1834-1886, using it as a farm house. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE: Pioneer residence on Milwaukee's south side, originally fronting the Old Chicago Road (now Whitnall Avenue). Built of cream brick with segmental arch windows. The first floor Italianate windows are probably a later addition, possibly when the house was rebuilt in 1862 following a fire. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Morgan Burdick was a pioneer settler in Milwaukee County. Born in 1813 in Jefferson County, N.Y., he first came to Milwaukee in 1834 and reputedly helped to build the first frame dwelling in Milwaukee. In that year, Burdick made a claim on the land of the present site (NW 1/4 section 21, Town of Lake). At that time there was no house in the township. After his marriage in 1837, in Ohio, he "returned and settled on his claim" (Western Hist. Pub. Co., History of Milwaukee). Burdick lived "the remainder of his life on the farm which he claimed fron the public domain and brought under cultivation" (Watrous). The Milwaukee Sentinel Index documents that Burdick raised good produce (including praiseworthy apples) on his farm, and that he was active in local polictics. He died in 1886 at the age of sevety-three.
