Additional Information: | The building illustrates its functions: the low classroom sections and the tall office tower. The construction is well-expressed, especially on the tower section, which features re-entrant corners, with the appearance of curtain walls suspended from the corner concrete shafts. The building makes good use of its site, with separate plazas and walkways giving access to the different sections of the building. Underground parking is also integrated into the project. Though slightly shorter than the Capitol building, Van Hise Hall is situated on a hill, making it the highest building in Madison. The Board of Regents meets on the top floor of Van Hise Hall, making the building a symbol of the University. Van Hise Hall retains a high degree of integrity. Named for Charles Van Hise, UW president from 1903-1918. |
