Additional Information: | The Woodson YMCA is significant for its association with the late nineteenth century recreational history of Wausau and for its association with Aytchmonde Perrin Woodson, a friend, past president, and former director of the Woodson YMCA. Further, the Woodson YMCA is an excellent example of post-World War II recreational modernism in Wausau.
The present building was erected in 1962, with an addition appended to the building in 1978. Woodson (1881-1958) was born in Platte City, Platte County, Missouri, where he spent his childhood. He graduated from both the University of Missouri and the Kansas City Law School, the latter in 1906. He practiced law from 1906 until 1913 when he became associated with the Wausau Group, controlling extensive lumber, paper and public utility enterprises in various parts of the U.S. and Canada.
The building retains a high level of integrity and features design elements indicative of 1960s and 1970s architecture, including window bands, clerestory windows, casement windows, elevated window placement, patterned tile work, concrete detailing, built-in planters, and a variety of cladding, including brick, tile, aluminum, and stone.
