NOTES
Additional Information:Another map code for this dwelling is DO 1/21, found on the DOT Watertown map. This two story house displays characteristics of the the Italianate, vernacular and Queen Anne styles. The building was constructed with an irregular shaped plan configuration, a brick foundation, a cream brick exterior, a wood and brick trim and a shingled multi-gable and hip roof. Raised brick arched window heads embellish the original two over-two windows, which still remain on the dwelling. The once open porches, now enclosed, are in the angle of the house, at the front over the double leafed door and over the side entrance. (See Bib. Ref. A). The residence is in excellent condition. Historical Background: This house was built for the local carpenter, Samuel A. Kussel in the 1870's. (See Bib. Ref. B). (According to the Intensive Survey Form, there were two spellings of this person's name, including Kussel and Kussell). Historical Significance: Initial research indicates that none of the occupants of this house were individually historically significant. Architectural/Engineering Singificance: The Samuel Kussell house is significant as an example of a vernacular interpretation of the Italianate style built in Watertown in the 1870's. However, the Samuel Kussell house does not exhibit as much Italianate architectural character as other substantial examples in the city. More significant examples of the style are located at 802 North Fourth (DO 28/22), 700 Clyman (DO 43/25), 802 Clyman (DO 43/26) and 908 Country Lane (DO 27/32).
