Additional Information: | Another map code for this building is DO 1/14, found on the DOT Watertown map. This two story side gabled building features a rectangular shaped plan configuration and a brick foundation. The painted brick exterior is highlighted by brick and wood trim materials, and the gable roof is covered with shingles. Rectangular windows with panes arranged two-over-two have decorative projecting wooden triangular shaped heads on the facade. The open designed porch is a later addition; its hipped roof is supported by squared wooden posts. Another south porch has a decked roof. The building is in good condition. Individuals associated with this structure and the dates of their associations include the following: Ferdinand C. Hartwig, from c. 1900 to c. 1911 and Herman Dreibus, from c. 1915 to c. 1921. The building is assciated with the development of retail commerce in Watertown from c. 1900 to c. 1921. Historical Background: This building was the location of Ferdinand C. Hartwig's grocery and saloon between around 1900 and 1915. It was the Herman Dreibus grocery from about 1915 to about 1921. (See Bib. Ref. A). (The Intensive Survey Form did not indicate whether or not this structure ever served as an inn). Historical Significance: This building has some historical interest as the location of a grocery and saloon business. The business contributed to the overall commercial activities in Watertown, but are not individually significant, therefore, this building does not meet the criteria for local history. Architectural/Engineering Significance: The Dew Drop Inn is a commercial structure exhibiting a fair degree of integrity and some architectural interest. However, because it exhibits less architectural character and less integrity than many other commercial buildings in the city, this particular building is not architecturally significant. |
