AMERICAN LEGION PURCHASED THE BUILDING IN 1941. Resurveyed 2014. American Legion moved and put building up for sale in 2013. The Charles and Margarethe Ruedebusch House is a high style Italianate house constructed in 1876. The 2-story house is rectangular in plan with a low-pitch, asphalt shingled hipped roof and cream brick exterior. The eaves are widely overhaning with wide band trim and paired brackets in the eaves. A one story porch with scroll cut brackets wraps around all elevations, though portions have been enclosed. The windows throughout the original mass of the house are tall, narrow windows-characteristic of Italianate houses. Segmental arches crown the windows-those in the upper story are articulated with keystones and those below the porch are simple brick arches without keystones. The principal elevation faces south onto Horicon Street and is the only elevation that contains paired windows. The south facade is comprised of three bays-the central bay projects slightly from the house crowned with a prominent pediment containing the date stone. The central bay is further distinguished with articulated round arch windows in the upper story and the entrance below a central porch pediment. The entance is set below a segmental arch transom and accented by the paired porch posts. The bulding was purchased by the Bonnatt-Whereas American Legion Post #69 in 1941 and later added an addition to the east facade circa 1960. The partially in ground side gabled addition, constructed circa 1960, was adjoined to the east elevation below the porch. A front gabled entry vestibule extends from the south elevation of the addition adjacent to the southeast corner of the porch. Charles Ruedebusch, the original owner of the house, was a prominent figure in the City of Mayville arriving in 1853. Shortly after his arrival, Rudebusch opened a general store and later constructed the commercial block at 119 S. Main Street in 1891, which stands today and is a contributing building in the Main Street Historic District. In 1875, Ruedebusch also took ownership of the Mayville White Lime Works. Despite these associations, Charles Ruedebusch does not seem to represent significance on a state and national level. The Ruedebusch house is a fine example of high style Italianate residence featuring a symmetrical principal elevation, overhanging eaves with wide band trim and paired brackets, scroll cut brackets in the porch and tall, narrow windows crowned with articulated window crowns. Despite the circa 1960 addition to the east elevation and the enclosure of the porch at the north elevation, the house still clearly conveys its original design and composition as an Italiate residence. Proposed adjacent project activities will reconstruct Horicon St (STH28) in front of the property. City utility improvements and storm sewer construction will require additional trench excavation within the 66' right of way. The existing sidewalk and terrace will be reconstructed. As the project has the potential to impact the property's setting, a DOE is recommended. The property was previously surveyed in 1974. The inventory record was updated, including a current photo. |
