Property owned by James Webster in 1860. This was the last of three farmsteads that the native New Yorker developed in the area. It was his most successful. Known as the Elba Cener Stock Farm, it became renowned for Spanish Merino sheep and short-horn cattle. As a leading stockraiser, Webster was also a community leader; he served as president of the Elba Farmers Insurance Company and president of the Columbus Union Agricultural Society. It appears that Webster passed the farm on to his son Samuel R.. The latter, who was locally prominent as a member the state senate during the 1890s and as the secretary of the Dodge County Fair Association, maintained the farm by 1910. The Webster family operated the sizeable farm until at least 1947. Also on property is a barn (AHI 117744) and silo (AHI 117743). |
