NOTES
Additional Information:Features of this Queen Anne styled retail building include a round corner tower with conical roof, elaborate stickwork in the polygonal gable roofed turret, segmental arched and half round windows, bracketed eaves, and a transomed door. Another map code is 19/23 on the Hand drawn map. In 1977, the building housed the A Kohls Insurance Agency. Later it housed the AK Voight Insurance agency. The north half of the building was completed in 1891 and the south half, including the three-story tower, was added in 1900.
Bibliographic References:Tax rolls indicate that the lot was owned in 1889 by Lambert Neuberg, a jeweler who, by 1890, had made an improvement to the lot. By 1891, Neuberg had sold the property to jeweler Thomas Bruhy who continued to make improvements to the lot, ultimately building the north half of the existing building as his jewelry store and office of optometry. In 1900, he built the south, residential portion of the building, Tax rolls, City of West Bend, 1889, 1890, 1899, 1900; Sanborn fire insurance maps, 1892, 1900; Newsbrief (re: rebuilding store and residence), West Bend Democrat, 19 July 1899.
