Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. THE DESIGN OF THIS HIGHLY INTACT ASTYLISTIC UTILITARIAN FORM COUNTY HIGHWAY GARAGE AND REPAIR SHOP BUILDING DISPLAYS ART DECO INFLUENCE IN ITS DETAILING AND IT WAS BUILT IN 1939 USING WPA FUNDING. THE BUILDING IS STILL IN USE AS A COUNTY GARAGE TODAY. This building has two one-story tall components, an 80-foot by 160-foot repair shop, and a 28-foot by 40-foot office wing. The repair shop portion rests on a poured concrete plinth foundation, the walls that rest on this foundation are reddish-brown brick over concrete block, and all of its elevations are divided into bays by brick-clad pilaster strips. The repair shop is sheltered by an arched roof, which is supported on steel trusses and clad in rolled asphalt. The facade is three bays wide and crowned by a stepped parapet wall that hides the end of the building's arched roof from view. Each of these bays is flanked by a broad brick pilaster which are topped by stepped concrete Art Deco style inspired capitals, the building's only ornamentation. The center bay contains a single very large flat-arched garage door opening that now contains a modern overhead garage door, and a large sign above this opening reads "Taylor Co Hwy Dept" and "1939". The eastern elevation is divided into eight equal-width bays by nine pilaster strips and each bay contain a single large flat-arched window opening that is filled with a pair of modern fifteen-light windows that have snap-in muntins. The western elevation is also divided into equal-width bays by pilaster strips and its northernmost six bays each contain a single large flat-arched window opening that is filled with a pair of modern fifteen-light windows with snap-in muntins. The southernmost bays are covered by the office wing. |
