Additional Information: | ELABORATE SPINDLEWORK TRUSSES AND CARVED BARGEBOARDS. ALL PORCHES W/SPINDLEWORK SUNBURST MOTIF. SPINDLEWORK IN GABLET OVER ENTRANCE. 2019 - appearance altered This two-and-one-half story Queen Anne-style house was constructed in 1894 for Dr. William Hausmann. It has an irregular form, clapboard siding, a hipped roof with lower cross gables, and elaborate decorative detailing characteristic of the Queen Anne style. The asymmetrical façade features a wraparound porch and dominant front-facing gable. The front entrance is located on the north side of the façade opposite a large fixed picture window. The porch’s pent roof is supported by turned wood posts with decorative detailing. Above the front steps, the porch roof forms a front gable, which features spindlework in the shape of a sunburst. Additional spindlework is found in the gables on the façade and south elevation, which also have a mix of cladding materials. On the second story of the façade are two pairs of six-over-six replacement sash windows. Similar replacement windows are also on the secondary elevations. The porch on the south elevation has a second story beneath the side gable. The house was built for Dr. William Hasumann in 1894 and is an intact example of an early Queen Anne home in Kewaskum. Dr. Hausmann died in 1902, but was survived by multiple sons, who also appeared to excel in the medical field as prominent physicians or dentists. Hausmann was born in 1855 in Buffalo, New York, to German parents. Eventually the family settled in Fond Du Lac County after the death of William’s father. William was introduced to the study of medicine by Dr. Senn of Chicago who took Hausmann on as a medical apprentice while practicing in Elmore in Fond Du Lac County. Hausmann practiced in Elmore for 20 years after graduating from the Chicago Medical College in 1874. In 1894 he relocated to Kewaskum to start his own practice and had this home built. When William fell ill in 1901, he called on his son, N. Edward Hausmann to take over his practice in Kewaskum. The home of his son is next door at 1546 Fond Du Lac Avenue (AHI #14606) and also is a Washington County Landmark, but is outside of the APE for this project. |
