Additional Information: | Contractor was Pfiefer Construction Company. The St. Mary Help of Christians was a Catholic parish that was once part of the Holy Assumption Congregation. During a period of rapid population growth and expansion in West Allis, several immigrant groups sought to have their own parishes. in 1908, the Slovenes, under the leadership of Reverend John Smolej, branched off from Holy Assumption and constructed the church for St. Mary Help of Christians and later erected a modern church, rectory, school, and gymnasium. The congregation closed in 2007. The gymnasium has a side-gabled roof and contains a full kitchen in the basement and a combination basketball court/auditorium upstairs. A series of six glass block window groups are present on the street (basement) level along the east elevation. A long, continuous band of second-story clerestory windows are present along the east elevation and meet the roofline. The main entry, located along Madison St. at the southwest corner of the building, displays a recessed double-height entry. Double glass doors are flanked by full-length frosted glass sidelights and topped by three transoms. The central transom bear a metal panel with the name "St. Mary Help of Christians" as well as the 1957 construction date. A shallow wood-faced flat roof divides the lower portion of the entry from the upper, which is comprised of six large glass panes. |
