Additional Information: | The 6th Street bridge rises from cut stone abutments that may possibly date to the line's original construction in the mid- 1800's. Atop the stone abutments, however, are concrete "risers," atop which today the tracks are carried. This clearly indicates that the bridge is not original. In addition to that fact, it should be noted that uprights, set a sidewalk's width inside the abutments, are constructed of "I" beams and angles. It is between these uprights that modest, built-up girders are carried, thus suggesting that this is a very shallow through-plate, girder bridge. The bridge plate reveals that this structure was built in 1908 by the American Bridge Company. steel beam or plate girder bridge |
