Additional Information: | Building 301 was constructed between November 1931 and July 1932 as the Camp Headquarters Officers Mess. Lt. Colonel Henry C. Hengels, State of Wisconsin Military Architect and Engineer, was the architect. The building originally contained a kitchen and mess hall; the building currently is used as housing. The one-story building measures 20 x 50 feet and is constructed of stuccoed hollow clay tile. The corners of the building and the exterior end chimney stack are fieldstone. The upper front gable end is sheathed with wood sheet siding with battens. The gable roof is sheathed with asphalt shingles and has scrolled purlin ends on the gable ends and exposed rafter ends along the side elevations with scalloped eave boards. The original wood-frame, six-over-six-light, double-hung sash windows have been replaced with metal-frame, one-by-one sliding units. The paired windows along the west elevation angle outwards to form a triangular projection. Although the original drawings depicted a flat wall along this elevation, a photograph of the completed building dated 1932 depicted the angled windows in place. All window openings have wood lintels and stone sills. Two doors located in the front (north) elevation are ornamental wood panel doors with bubble glass light and ornamental scrollwork installed during the 1980s renovations. A porch spans the front (north) elevation. Square wood posts with chamfered corners support the porch roof beams with curved ends. The porch originally was screened, but was enclosed with particle board railing and windows ca. 2000. The porch is accessed by concrete steps with a metal railing. Between 1942 and 1944, a bathroom addition measuring 13 x 20 feet was added to the southeast corner of the building. A bedroom addition was added to the bathroom addition by 1968. In 1983, the entire interior was gutted and refinished. No original interior finishes remain. |
