| Additional Information: | 1998- The Madison maintenance facility consists of one building located on .89 acres of land in Madison, Wisconsin. The area immediately surrounding the building is covered by concrete or gravel. The facility is located in an industrial area. A records search at the Wisconsin State Historic Preservation Office revealed eight archaeological sites (47-DA-53, 47-DA-54, 47-DA-60, 47-DA-113, 47-DA-118, 47-DA-139, 47-DA-564, and 47-DA-570) within a one-mile radius of the facility. AMSA #139 property has been significantly disturbed by construction activities, with much the property paved or graded. An on-site assessment determined that there is a low probability of extant archaeological remains on the property. The building is in fair condition. An addition was added in 1960 and another in 1965. The building does not appear to exhibit significant architectural character or merit. The maintenance facility functions as an administrative and vehicle maintenance facility for AMSA #139 (Area Maintenance Support Activity). Originally constructed in 1948, it is now a multiple-story L-shaped structure that rests on a concrete foundation. The largest section of this building, built in 1948, is a 1½-story, rectangular, concrete block, vehicle maintenance section with a stepped parapet façade and a barrel-vaulted roof. Attached to the south wall of the barrel-vaulted roof section is a one-story, square, flat-roofed, concrete block administrative section and a 1½-story, rectangular, flat-roofed, concrete block, vehicle maintenance section that was constructed in 1960. Attached to the west wall of the barrel-vaulted roof section is a 1½-story, rectangular, corrugated metal addition that was constructed in 1965. The east wall of the barrel-vaulted roof section has a single metal pedestrian door and metal overhead-retractable bay door. Fenestrations include two single-hung windows and a set of two single-hung windows on the east wall and three single-hung windows are on the north wall of the barrel-vaulted roof section. The east wall of the one-story section has single metal pedestrian door. Fenestrations include a set of two single-hung windows and a set of three single-hung windows located on the north wall of the one-story section. Also, two sets of two single-hung windows are located on the south wall of the one-story section. The south wall of the 1½-story flat roof addition has a metal overhead-retractable bay door. The west wall of the corrugated metal addition has a metal overhead-retractable bay door and a single metal pedestrian door. Additional entrances to the corrugated metal addition are three metal overhead-retractable bay doors located on the north wall and three on the south wall. |
