NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' titled "Calumetville Community Center District" exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Built sometime before 1893.

1999:
The Turner Hall served a community well-established by 1848 and a surrounding rural area occupied by the mid to late 1840s. Both were predominately settled by Germans during the period of initial immigration from southern Germany including Rhineland and Mosel. (Mitchel 1854: 35,37; De Haas 1848: 23-24, 38; McKenna 1912:245; Schafer 1937: 146-49, 157-58). The Turnverein was a German organization advocating the development of the physical and mental well-being of its members. It was commonly established in areas of heavy German settlement. Since one of the earliest identified Turnvereins was founded in Milwaukee and Mequon by 1852-1853 and in Fond u Lac by 1855 (Brosius 1914: 54; Legreid 1986 (2): 2,4,8; McKenna 1912 132), the organization in Calumetville probably post-dates that period. The building likely served as the setting for many of the social activities of Germans in the rural area as well as in the community. The main, east-west section of the Turner Hall is first identified on an 1893 plat of Calumetville (Foote and Henion 1893). The grounds surrounding the Turner Hall often provided outdoor meeting areas for activites such as picnics, musical presentation, and bowling. This area was an important part of the property. By 1930, the building is identifed as the community club. Probably during this period, the building was used by the German community as a dance hall (W.W. Hixon & Co. 1930:205 ; interview, Elwyn Schommer, 7/6/99). The project will not directly affect the appearance of the building. However, since the current right of way lies along a portion of the building and the project my affect its setting.
