Additional Information: | HIGH RUSTICATED STONE FOUNDATION. BRICK WORK 'RUSTICATION' OF 1ST FLR. MOST TRIM IS OF PAINTED SHEET METAL INCLUDING DENTICULATED CORNICE. STILTED SILLS. A non-extant wood-frame hotel, the American House, was constructed at the corner of Wisconsin Street and East Main Street in 1835. The hotel was sold to John Thill in 1891, who operated the hotel until 1902 when the older hotel was demolished. A new three-story brick hotel with forty rooms was constructed at the same location and remained the largest hotel in the city until after World War II. By 1912, the hotel was renamed Mayer’s Hotel after it was sold. The property became the Port Hotel and Restaurant in 1973 and the hotel closed in the early 1980s while the restaurant remained open. The building was renovated and reopened in 2005. The dining room and bar on the first floor have remained in place since the hotel’s construction. The building, its various restaurants, and bars was a popular destination in Port Washington throughout the twentieth century. |
