DESCRIPTION
The Thoreau School was built in 1892. It has a gable ell form that sits on a tall, cut stone foundation. The building features clapboard siding and a abundance of wood shingles in the upper attic story. Windows are and narrow multi-pane double-hung sashes. A pair of smaller windows lights the attic story. A picturesque bell tower sits at the top front of the building. An enclosed entrance consist of a wooden door decorated with sidelights.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
The Thoreau School is one of Mequon's small historic schoolhouse. Like many rural areas, prior to the 1960s, Mequon had numerous school "districts", each with its own school house. The system of small schoolhouses serving local rural districts existed until the consolidation movement into larger elementary schools serving bigger populations and bigger areas made them obsolete.
