Additional Information: | Resting on a stone foundation, this house is topped with a gabled roof. An open porch with turned supports fronts the majority of the primary (west) facade; the southern end of which is enclosed and carries a large, plate-glass picture window. Another plate-glass window is situated along the upper level and immediately above the preceding example; a pair of curiously shaped wall dormers - much like those found on the Arnold Residence (see discussion for 131 N. Martin Street) - interrupt the roofline. A house and possibly a blacksmith shop was located on this parcel by no later than 1870. That year, the owner is noted as David Phelps. From 1871 to 1891, the property was occupied by blacksmith Harvey Smith and did indeed include a house and blacksmith shop. The home and business was sold to Charles H. Munson between 1891 and 1892. Munson was also a blacksmith; the family retained the property until at least 1937. |
