Wirth, a shoemaker, settled here in 1846 and in 1865 founded what became one of the county's largest businesses. In this substantial stone Greco-Italianate store built in 1871, he sold groceries, general merchandise, farm implements, clothing and was the first merchant in the County to offer ready-made shoes.
