Additional Information: | The Gateway Lodge was built between 1937 and 1938 by John King, a radio and TV magnate from Detroit, Michigan. The John King family operated the lodge until selling to Walt Williamson in 1960. It was then that the second floor was added to the building. THe original complex included the main lodge, the Inn, the golf course, the airport, a ski jump, a ski chalet, horse stables and employee housing, as well as the Gateway Gun Club. Although the Inn remain extant across the road, it is no longer associated with the Gateway Lodge. Only the golf course remains extant with the lodge. For more information, please see the Survey of Historic Resorts: Vilas County, Prepared by Heritage Research, Ltd., 2004. |
