Additional Information: | 2016- "This brick hospital complex is centered on a five-story main block from which extends one-story wings (and additions) to the north, east and south. Horizontal rows of plate-glass windows define the main block and no ornamentation is present outside of a large metal cross (south facade) attached to an ample expanse of plain brick. Open, veranda-like entrances defme the one-story wings. St. Nicholas Hospital was established in 1889 in a house by the Sisters of St. Francis. The order built its first hospital building on N. 9th Street in 1893. Numerous additions and improvements to this facility were built over the years and construction of the subject replacement complex started in 1976. Charles D. Smith & Sons of Fond duLac built the $17.1 million, 185-bed facility, which was completed in 1979." -"Superior Ave/CTH O, vic.
