Additional Information: | This two-story house rests on a concrete foundation. The overhanging eaves display wooden knee braces. A shed-roof porch extends across the primary elevation; it is entirely enclosed. Windows throughout the house are arranged singly, in pairs and in tripartite groupings and feature three-over-one-light panes in the upper sash. Two historic photos indicate that the house was originally covered with stucco, featured an open porch with a solid porch rail, and all windows were six-over-six-light examples. The earliest occupant on record was J.F. Whiting, the assistant manager at the iron works. When the company dissolved in 1936, the home was sold to Dr. John and Maxine Pichotta, who resided there until at least 1942. Dr. Pichotta was the local dentist. This home is one of at least twenty homes in the City of Mayville that were built as housing for workers at the Northwestern Iron Company. The Northwestern Iron Co. was a significant employer in Mayville and was responsible for attracting a large number of the city's inhabitants. As housing became scarce, the Northwestern Iron Co. began to construct housing and then rent them to their employees. |
