NOTES
Additional Information:The building was built around 1895, with the address 1005 Michigan Avenue, for the millinery shop of Mrs. Emma Roux, who had previously operated her shop at two other locations along the same block, beginning by 1887 across the street at 1012 Michigan Avenue (non-extant) and then next door at 1001 Michigan Avenue (extant) since around 1889. The 1903 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map indicates that the building was wood framed and clad with metal, which may indicate the extant pressed metal siding is original to the building’s construction. Emma Roux continued operating her shop at the building until around 1910. By 1912, the building was occupied by the leather findings and shoe repair shop of William E. Hinz who continued operating his shoe repair business for 5 decades into the early 1960s. By 1965, the building was occupied by Bob’s Shoe Service. From the late 1940s through the early 1970s, the building was listed with the address 1005A Michigan Avenue. Heinemann’s Shoes occupied the building by 1968 through the early 1980s, after which it became Molly’s Cobbler Shop by 1985. Still operating from the building today, Molly’s Cobbler Shop claims to be the Wisconsin's oldest shoe repair shop citing the establishment of William Hinz’s shoe repair shop in 1904; however, a shoe repair or leather findings shop owned by William Hinz does not appear to be listed in city directories before 1912 (nor any other shoe repair shop on this block of Michigan Avenue). Sometime after 2002, the building’s address was changed to 1003 Michigan Avenue.
