In 1966, a new altar was installed to facing the congregation to implement changes adopted by the Roman Catholic Church during the Second Vatican Council. New bells were installed in 1978. The lower level hall was renovated in 1989 and named Dominican Hall. Over a ten year period beginning in 1992, the church’s stained glass windows were restored. The parish constructed a non-extant school building in 1914 east of the church at 518 New York Avenue (later 522 New York Avenue). St. Clement Catholic School opened in 1915 taught by the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa, Wisconsin. A new school building was constructed in 1951 north of the church at 721 N. 6th Street. St. Clement school closed in 1985 when it merged with Holy Name parish school to become Holy Family Catholic School operating from the Holy Name school building at 814 Superior Avenue (AHI 128704). The school merged with the closed St. Dominic Catholic School in 2012 becoming St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic School. A non-extant convent was obtained by 1928 north of the church at 509 Wisconsin Avenue (later 511 Wisconsin Avenue). By 1965, the old convent and several adjacent houses to the east were demolished for construction of a new convent at 503 Wisconsin Avenue. With Sheboygan County’s Hispanic population growing, Sinsinawa Dominican Sister Mary Helen Neenan began ministering to Sheboygan’s Hispanic community in at St. Clement in 1968 with the first Spanish language liturgy celebrated in the St. Clement Convent Chapel in 1969. By 1980, the convent housed Catholic Social Services which continues to utilize the building today. Around 1955, the old school was demolished for construction of a new rectory at 522 New York Avenue. The rectory also served as a parish office. Today, the parish’s office operates with the Holy Name parish office in the Holy Name Rectory at 807 Superior Avenue (AHI 82275). |
