Additional Information: | November 2003-The Black Hawk Motel is a large motel complex that includes several buildings fronting East Broadway and Race Streets. A two-story model building is located on the southeast corner of Broadway and Race. The ten unit building was constructed in 1961. It follows a rectangular plan, has a concrete foundation, and is clad in wood veneer. Exterior stairs are located on both ends of the building. The barrel vaulted roofline extends over the exterior corridor and stair landing. A decorative stone veneer is located on portions of the lower level. Each unit has an exterior entrance and a large fixed-picture window flanked by casement windows with a smaller version of the window configuration on the rear. Vinyl siding has been applied to the rear of the building. A c. 1940, one story, cross gabled residence is located at the southwest corner of Broadway and Race Street. Portions of the house are clad in vinyl siding and brick. Wide gauge aluminum siding is located in the gabled ends. Windows are a combination of fixed and one over one, double hung sash. Several other Black Hawk properties are located further south of Broadway Street. They include two 1962-63 motel buildings, an office, a utility building with motel units and an attached indoor pool addition, a playground area with an indoor pool, and two smaller c. 1970 motel buildings. The motel buildings and office have the same exterior appearance-stone veneer on the façade with wide gauge aluminum siding on the remainder of the building and in the gabled ends. Several c. 1930s cabins have been relocated to the corner of Washington Avenue and Race Street and were altered to appear similar to the 1960s buildings. The Black Hawk Cottage Court was established on this property in the 1930s. Little remains of the original complex. According to the property owner, as additional buildings were constructed beginning in 1961 the original cabins were relocated from the area surrounding the office to their current location at the rear of the property in Race Street. The complex has been altered over the years to appeal to tourists and appear more modern. |
