The congregation, initially known as the Norwegian Lutheran Church, was first started in 1859 by Reverend Lauritz Larson. This church represents what may be the first Norwegian Lutheran settlement in the vicinity of Elk Mound. The first building used as a church was constructed in 1879, but was not dedicated until 1888. In 1898, the church expanded. Storm windows were added in 1981. The church is older than other local churches in the village of Elk Mound and Big Elk Creek.

The front church facade was originally accented by a center steeple, before the two story addition was added on in 1978.

2020 Survey Update:

Barum Lutheran Church is a frame, cross-gable building clad with vinyl siding resting on a stone foundation. Erected in 1879 , the gothic-arched windows with label display the influence of the Gothic Revival style. The church possesses a square entrance tower capped by an octagonal bell cupola with a tall, flared, hipped roof. In 1979, the narthex and entrance were altered with a two-story, front-gabled addition appended to the front façade.

The congregation at Barum Lutheran Church likely takes its name from the town of Barum, near Oslo Norway, where many of its early congregants were born and raised. The congregation was first formed by Reverend Lauritz Larson in 1859. The first services were held in homes and a public school in Elk Mound until plans for a church began in 1877 with final construction completed in 1879 and dedicated in 1888.

In 1898 the church was enlarged by cutting it in two and adding a center section and Sacristy. The basement was added in 1935. As noted in church literature: “many improvements have been made over the years”, with one of the largest being the addition of the large front entrance and Narthex in 1979. Other improvements include new carpeting, an improved balcony, new Sunday school rooms in the basement, refurbished bathrooms. Storm windows were added in 1981 and in 1983 the basement was insulated, paneled and carpeted.
