Additional Information: | 1998: In 1841, Whitman Sayles built a dam along White's Creek (now Genesee Creek). The original structure was an earthen dam with some limestone used for the spillway. The construction of the dam created Saylesville Mill Pond. Since its construction, the dam has been well kept and few changes have been made to the structure. In 1928, a flood severely damaged the dam and it was rebuilt with a concrete spillway section. Approximately five years ago, the Department of Natural Resources repaired the concrete of the dam and removed trees and shrubs from the top of the structure. The structure retains its historic integrity and setting and is therefore considered contributing to the district. |
